What is Mandelic Acid? A Complete Guide for Beginners

What is Mandelic Acid? A Complete Guide for Beginners

By Qurat ul Ain Nasrullah on Aug 21, 2026

Most beginners try glycolic acid, salicylic acid, or jump straight to retinoids. Used too frequently and aggressively, these actives can compromise the skin barrier which results in red, tight, and inflamed skin and sometimes, even more pigmented than before treatment started. This is where mandelic acid helps. This naturally raises the question: what is mandelic acid, how is it different from other acids, what is it used for, and how is it gentler than others?

In this blog, we will break down each query about mandelic acid, how Jenpharm MandelAC face wash and serum support skin health, and much more that you need to know.

What is Mandelic Acid?

Mandelic acid is an alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA), the same family as glycolic and lactic acid, but unlike them, it comes from bitter almonds. However, it has larger molecules. Mandelic acid works by loosening the bonds that hold dead skin cells together on the surface. It allows the dead skin cells to shed faster, revealing a smoother and more even skin tone.

Mandelic acid’s larger molecular size makes it different from other AHAs like glycolic acid, lactic acid, and citric acid. It works best as an introductory acid for people who have tried other exfoliants and faced sensitivity.

How Is Mandelic Acid Different From Other AHAs and BHAs?

The biggest difference between mandelic acid and other exfoliating acids comes down to molecular size. Glycolic acid is the smallest and most common AHA with 76 daltons. Mandelic acid weighs roughly 152 daltons, which is double. It means it diffuses slowly into the skin and stays closer to the surface instead of going deeper into the epidermis.

On the other hand, salicylic acid is a beta-hydroxy acid (BHA) that works entirely differently. It is an oil-soluble ingredient that travels down into the pore to clear out trapped sebum. It suits those with blackheads, whiteheads, breakouts, and other congested skin problems. But it is much harsher and dries out skin. Therefore, you cannot use it every day. On the contrary, mandelic acid has mild lipophilic character due to its molecular structure, which gives it some of that same pore-cleaning benefit without stripping away natural moisture.

Why is Mandelic Acid Gentler for Darker Skin Tones?

This is the factor that matters most for Pakistani medium to deeper skin tones. Darker skin produces more melanin in response to inflammation and sun exposure. As a result, a pimple, an overly aggressive acid, or even a sunburn can trigger a dark mark that lingers for months after the original inflammation has healed. This is known as post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation or PIH. Melanin-rich brown skin tones are more prone to this than fairer skin tones.

Because mandelic acid has a larger molecule size, it penetrates slowly and evenly rather than penetrating aggressively into the deeper layers of skin. Therefore, it does not trigger inflammation in the skin that can induce pigmentation. It does not mean that mandelic acid is weaker. Instead, it works gradually to fade the appearance of hyperpigmentation through controlled, gentle exfoliation, making it one of the better exfoliating options for melanin-rich skin.

What is Mandelic Acid Used for?

Mandelic acid helps in treating various skin concerns without being harsh. It controls acne, removes post-acne marks, evens skin tone, and smooths texture. Here is how mandelic acid helps treat each skin concern.

Concern

How Mandelic Acid Helps

Active acne

Has anti-bacterial properties as well as oil-regulating support that control future breakouts

Post-acne dark spots

Gently exfoliates the skin layer so pigmented cells shed faster without irritating the skin

Melasma/ uneven skin tone

Helps disperse melanin more evenly in the skin with low risk of triggering further pigmentation

Dull, rough texture

Loosens the protein bonds holding dead skin cells together for a smoother surface over time

It is worth noting that mandelic acid is not a miracle ingredient. It won’t not dry out pimples overnight for clear skin. It works gradually by penetrating slowly into the layers of skin and gently exfoliating. So, it gradually improves skin tone, texture, and breakout frequency.

How to Use Mandelic Acid Safely

Mandelic acid is one of the safest acids in skincare due to its gentle exfoliating properties. However, it does not mean that you can use it without precaution and care. A few basics make the difference between smooth results and unnecessary irritation.

  • Start slow: two to three times a week for the first two to four weeks.

  • Apply it to clean and dry skin.

  • Choose a beginner-friendly formula according to your skin type from MandelAC cream, MandelAC Face Wash, and MandelAC serum.

  • Patch test first: apply a small amount to the inner arm and wait 24 hours before using it on the face.

  • Increase the frequency gradually according to your skin’s tolerance

  • Don’t stack actives carelessly. Avoid layering it with other harsh actives like retinoids or salicylic acid. Use on alternate nights or use one in the AM and the other at PM

  • Follow with a moisturizer with ceramides and hyaluronic acid to make up for the moisture loss

The SPF Rule Isn’t Optional

Mandelic acid is an AHA, which increases sensitivity to UV rays, which requires SPF protection. Using it daily without sunscreen does not just risk sunburn; it also hinders improvement in hyperpigmentation. So, use a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher every morning as a compulsory step in your skincare routine to make Mandelic acid work better.

Final Word

Mandelic acid is not the newest or the most talked-about acid on the shelf. But it is built differently for the skin that cannot tolerate the aggressive ingredients. It gently exfoliates and treats acne. It works effectively for Pakistani medium-to-deeper skin tones, with slow penetration. As a result, the skin gets effective treatment with minimal irritation, even if results build more gradually.

For a daily entry point, you can start with MandelAC Face Wash in your cleansing routine. Jenpharm has a range of mandelic acid products with cream and serum formulations that allow you to have a consistent routine for the targeted results.
