Sunscreen In Pakistan | The Complete Guide for Pakistan - SPF, PA Ratings & Choosing by Skin Type

Sunscreen In Pakistan | The Complete Guide for Pakistan - SPF, PA Ratings & Choosing by Skin Type

By Qurat ul Ain Nasrullah on Sep 29, 2026

Search for sunscreen options online, and you will get plenty of results. You will see SPF 40, SPF 60, SPF 100, PA+++ or PA++++. Some of them promise zero white cast. Some offer tinted coverage that acts as makeup too. Some are heavy. Some are lightweight. With hundreds of options in front of you, you are confused about what to buy. So, you must have been guessing about the right sunscreen in Pakistan for you.

But guessing is not actually necessary if you know the right information. If someone explains sunscreen to you, you can easily pick the right one for you and help protect your skin from sun tan. This guide explains what SPF and PA are. It highlights the difference between each SPF number. Also, learn the connection between a high UV index and sunscreen in Pakistan. More than anything, it clarifies how to choose the right sunscreen for your skin type from Jenpharm’s sun protection collection.

Key Takeaways

  • Pakistan’s high UV index needs a broad-spectrum sunscreen application to prevent hyperpigmentation, sunburn, and skin cancer

  • Every skin type needs a suitable sunscreen in Pakistan with the right SPF number, supporting ingredients, and formulas that suit individual skin types

  • Explore Jenpharm’s sun protection range that offers the best sunscreens in Pakistan for every skin need.

Why UV Exposure in Pakistan Deserves Daily Sun Protection

Temperature is a bad proxy for UV exposure. A hot, hazy afternoon can carry less UV radiation than a cooler, clear one, because UV levels depend on the sun's angle, altitude, cloud cover, time of day, and season, not how warm the air feels on your skin.

The more important indicator is the UV index. According to the World Health Organization, people should take sun protection seriously as the UV index reaches 3 or above. The higher it gets, the higher the risk of sun-related skin issues. Across most of Pakistan, the UV index usually remains between moderate and high for most of the year. Therefore, sunscreen application remains non-negotiable even if it is less sunny outside.

It is also worth noting that UV exposure does not stop when you step indoors or when the climate gets cloudy or cold. Science says that UVA rays can pass through ordinary window glass while UVB rays are largely blocked by it. So, if you are someone who spends hours next to a sunlit window, your skin picks up UVA rays without even going outside. In Pakistan, most homes are built with lawns, terraces, balconies, or yards. Thus, open-structured homes and window-covered offices make people more exposed to UVA rays.

What do UVA and UVB rays do? UVB rays are responsible for sunburn, while UVA rays can cause premature aging and pigmentation. With time, the accumulation of damage from both UVA and UVB can lead to skin cancer.

None of this means sunscreen alone solves sun exposure. The WHO recommends treating it as part of a broader approach that also includes shade, protective clothing, and sunglasses or masks. But it does not mean you can be in the sun for longer than needed.

Understanding SPF 50, 60 and 100

SPF is an acronym for Sun Protection Factor.  SPF only measures protection against the UVB rays that cause sunburn. It says nothing about UVA rays that cause pigmentation and aging. That is why you need to see “broad-spectrum” or something that covers both UVA and UVB on the label.

As the number of SPF goes higher, people assume that it doubles the percentage of protection from sun rays. According to lab testing, an SPF 30 sunscreen blocks 97% of UVB rays, SPF 50 blocks 98%, and SPF 100 blocks about 99%. The jump from SPF 30 to 100 sounds very dramatic on the label, but it does not affect sun protection to a great extent.

  • SPF 30: blocks 97% of UVB rays. Does not really work in Pakistan's high UV index climate. You need frequent reapplication.

  • SPF 50: Blocks 98% of UVB rays. A recommended choice for regular outdoor exposure.

  • SPF 60: Blocks 98% of UVB rays. Similar protection to SPF 50. Recommended for outdoor exposure.

  • SPF 100: Blocks 99% of UVB rays. Still does not offer full protection.

  • Broad spectrum: Blocks both UVA and UVB rays

So if the protection gap is small, why so many SPF numbers? Research cites that people do not apply a generous recommended amount of SPF as needed for protection. So, buying a higher SPF product gives you a bit more of a buffer against the real-world under-application. Still, SPF 100 does not mean you do not need reapplication. You still need to reapply, though less frequently than lower numbers.

What Does PA+++ and PA++++ Mean?

PA stands for Protection Grade of UVA, a rating system developed by the Japan Cosmetic Industry Association and now widely used across Asian sunscreen labeling, including in Pakistan. It’s based on a lab measurement called the Protection Factor of UVA (PFA), calculated from how much a sunscreen delays UVA-induced skin darkening compared to unprotected skin.

The four-level scale works like this:

Rating

PFA Value

PA+

2 to under 4

PA++

4 to under 8

PA+++

8 to 16

PA++++

Above 16

More plus signs mean stronger UVA protection. What’s with being precise about: SPF and PA are two separate measurements answering two separate questions. A sunscreen does not automatically have a high PA rating just because it carries a high SPF number. If you do not find a PA rating on the label, look for a broad-spectrum label to get UVA coverage.

How to Choose Sunscreen in Pakistan for Your Skin Type

There’s no single sunscreen that works best for everyone. The right choice depends on your skin type and how it tolerates certain textures. A sunscreen that sits in a drawer unused protects nobody.

Oily Skin

A lightweight gel, fluid, or lotion texture generally sits better on oily skin than a heavy cream. The goal is to buy a sunscreen that you want to reapply rather than the most aggressively matte one. Jenpharm’s Spectra Matt SC SPF 50 is formulated for Oily and acne-prone skin with a sebomicropore-based texture aimed at reducing shine without a chalky finish.

Dry Skin

Moisturizing textures with ingredients like glycerine, hyaluronic acid, or ceramides feel more comfortable on dry skin. Dry skin does not need a matte, oil-absorbing formula. Jenpharm’s Spectra Block SPF 60 is positioned for normal and dry skin with Vitamin E.

Acne-Prone Skin

Sunscreen does not treat acne, but acne-prone skin needs sunscreen to avoid post-acne marks. Look for lightweight, non-comedogenic formulas. Also pay attention to fragrance if you have active acne and your skin reacts to fragrance easily. If any sunscreen formula triggers your acne, switch formulas rather than quitting sunscreen use. Jenpharm’s Spectra Block Aqua Fluid SPF 60 PA+++ offers a lightweight formulation to suit oily and acne-prone skin.

Sensitive Skin

Sensitive skin can react to unsuitable formulas, ingredients, or fragrance. Thus, look for fragrance-free and mild formulas that do not contain aggressive ingredients. Before you start using sunscreen for sensitive skin, always patch test to check for irritation.

Understanding the White Cast Problem

A sunscreen can offer excellent protection and still be genuinely annoying to wear because of the pale, chalky film that some formulas leave behind. It is a common complaint with most sunscreens in Pakistan among medium to deep skin tones. Mineral filters cause this white cast. But white cast does not mean that the sunscreen is poor or does not offer protection.

If you hold back from putting sunscreen because of white cast, you need a chemical, hybrid, or tinted sunscreen that is convenient for daily use.

Tinted Sunscreen for Pakistani Skin Tones

Tinted formulas earn their popularity for more than cosmetic reasons. Some contain iron oxides, which add protection against visible light that can worsen hyperpigmentation in darker skin tones. That is a genuine formulation difference, not just a marketing detail. However, learn to separate purely cosmetic tint from a formula with iron oxides. Jenpharm’s Spectra Block Max 100 gives a tinted sunscreen finish for everyday use.

How Much Sunscreen to Apply and When to Reapply

More than the SPF number, right application matters. No matter how much the SPF number differs, you still need reapplication and adequate application in the first place.

For the face, you need a two-finger rule. Take the product on your index and middle finger and apply it all over your face. People commonly under-apply around the hairline, ears, back of the neck, and tops of the feet. So, you must adequately apply sunscreen on all exposed parts.

Reapplication depends on exposure. For daily, incidental exposure like a short commute, a walk between errands, one morning application is enough. For prolonged outdoor exposure, reapply sunscreen every two hours or sooner after sweating.

Sunscreen Indoors or In Winter: Needed or Not?

The honest answer sits between two extremes. "You need sunscreen indoors every single day no matter what" oversimplifies it. So does "sunscreen is only for sunny outdoor days."

What actually matters is your real exposure. If you spend long stretches near a sunlit window, commute during the day, or step outside repeatedly, UVA exposure adds up regardless of the season. Remember, that ray type passes through glass and doesn't care much about temperature. Winter UV levels are generally lower than peak summer levels in most of Pakistan, but "lower" isn't "absent," particularly at midday or on clear days. If your day genuinely involves minimal window time and little outdoor exposure, the case for heavy reapplication is weaker — the goal is matching protection to actual exposure, not applying sunscreen as a ritual disconnected from what your day looks like.
