What Do SPF 40, 60, or 100 Actually Mean?

SPF offers blockage against UVB rays of the sun that cause sunburn and skin damage like sun spots or tanning. It measures how much UVB reaches the skin as compared to no protection. However, here you will know the real difference between the amount of protection each provides.

  • SPF 40: Blocks 97.5% UVB

  • SPF 60: Blocks 98.3% UVB

  • SPF 100: Blocks 99% UVB

There is a significantly smaller gap between the transmission of UVB while using each SPF number. Indoors or in case of less sun exposure, this gap does not make a difference. But, in direct sunlight exposure like in high altitude areas, beach, sports fields, etc, a higher SPF number can provide slightly longer and maximum protection.

However, all three sunscreens require reapplication after every 2 hours as the basic rule. Consistency in your sunscreen application ensures you get maximum sun protection and little to no sun damage from UV rays.

Who Should Choose SPF 40?

SPF 40 does not mean it is less effective. It can work effectively and perfectly who have a suitable routine that requires SPF 40 protection, like:

  • Those who have oily and acne-prone skin

  • Spend most of the time indoors or commuting like office workers or housewives

  • If you are new to SPF and need a lightweight sunscreen

Who Should Choose SPF 60?

SPF 60 offer slightly higher sun protection than lower numbers. It is ideal for those who:

  • Spend mixed time -some outdoor, some indoor

  • Drive regularly

  • Need reliable sun protection against the Pakistani climate

Who Should Choose SPF 100?

SPF 100 offers a maximum fool-proof protection against sun exposure, but when applied consistently and reapplied every two hours. It works for those who:

  • Spend 2+ hours outdoors in direct sun exposure

  • Stay at the beach, mountains, or sports fields

  • Have melasma

  • Have you undergone any skin procedures

  • Are fair-skinned and at risk of burning.

How to Apply Sunblock?

SPF comes as the last step and most crucial step of your AM skincare routine. But, you should follow a proper routine to complete a skin-friendly sun protection routine, like:

  • Cleanse and moisturize your face properly.

  • Once your moisturizer absorbs into the skin, only then do you apply sunscreen.

  • Apply your sunblock 15-20 minutes before sun exposure

  • Take a liberal amount (use two-finger rule)

  • Apply it evenly all over your face and neck

  • Press and smooth into the skin. Avoid rubbing it aggressively

  • Reapply every 2 hours

Do Darker Skin Tones Need SPF?

Up till now, we have learnt that high direct sun exposure demands a higher SPF number to block UVB damage and melanin production. This section covers how darker skin tones require a higher number of SPF to combat excessive melanin production and prevent hyperpigmentation.

In Pakistan, the average number of people has a medium to darker skin tone, which means they have a higher amount of melanin production that protects their skin. But, it also means that while protecting against sun exposure, skin becomes darker and hyperpigmentation worsens. Thus, they need a higher SPF.

Dermatologists recommend a minimum of SPF 60 and a maximum of SPF 100 to prevent hyperpigmentation in dark skin tones. In case of active pigmentation treatment, prioritise sun protection.

The Bottom Line

In Pakistan, the direct sun exposure and harmful UV rays call for daily sunscreen application and reapplication. So, choose Spectra Matt SC SPF 40 for daily indoor sunscreen. Choose Spectra Matt SPF 60 for commuting or mixed days. You need Spectra Block Max SPF 100 if you are an athlete, traveller, stay outdoors mostly, or live in high-altitude areas.

Use your sunscreen religiously, especially in Pakistan and watch your skin become healthy. Trust Jenpharm for the right sun protection according to your lifestyle.
